The first five Siconia™ „SMARTY IQ“ smart meter gateways (smgw) from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus are connected to the central, state-organised public key infrastructure (PKI). Thus, the first gateways can be handed to customers for testing purposes.

Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus achieves the next milestone on the way to the smart meter gateway certification according to the Common Criteria (CC) at the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Germany.

“We are very proud that our first five gateways with real PKI certificates were produced”, reports Dirk Engel, head of product management at Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus GmbH. “With the approval of our ALC test by the BSI, we are not only about to get our Siconia™ SMARTY IQ certified, but we can also deliver the first smart meter gateways under PKI conditions for testing purposes to our customers.”

The approved documentation allows Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus as a gateway manufacturer to perform ALC tests, which means that, for the first time, lifecycle processes can be tested with the Siconia™ SMARTY IQ gateway while being connected to the smart meter PKI – from the secure supply chain to the proper disposal. Only gateway manufacturers, such as Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus, who are in the SMGw certification process and, hence, have already been able to prove their high safety requirements, are entitled to start into the ALC test phase.

The smart meter gateway (smgw) SMARTY IQ from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus receives the type examination certificate of the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB). This certificate proves that the gateway is in accordance with the PTB requirements 50.8 for smgws for legal metrology.

With the receipt of the type examination certificate Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus has successfully reached one of the most relevant milestones on the way to the smart meter gateway certification according to the Common Criteria (CC) at the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Germany.

As a part of the PTB's calibration verification procedure, the SMARTY IQ was, amongst other things, tested on the acquisition, processing and storage of measurement data as well as on relevant tariff applications. In addition, further metering system components were qualified according to PTB-A 50.8, such as the SMGw connection to a gateway administration software, the connection of the SMGw to a communication adapter as well as the measurement data visualization via the customer display software TRuDI, which enables the end user to perform an invoice verification via the connected SMGw.

“The type examination certificate of the PTB according to the so-called Module B proves that the SMARTY IQ fulfils the metrological and legal requirements for the rollout of smart metering systems in Germany. We are very pleased about the successful completion of the PTB procedure and would like to thank all our partners who supported us,” explains Dirk Engel, Head of Product Management at Sagemcom Neuhaus GmbH. “In the next step, we expect to receive Module D qualifying the production of our plant in Rostock in line with the calibration law. This step is expected to be promptly followed by the CC certification by the BSI.”

PTB-A 50.8 and CC certification are based on the law on the digitization of the energy transition. The aim of the energy transition is to link energy generation and consumption in the distribution network in a smart way in order to increase efficiency and comfort within smart grids. The focus is on the introduction of smart metering systems consisting of a socalled modern metering device, e.g. a digital electricity meter in combination with a smart meter gateway. The SMGw serves as a communication unit in the smart metering system, receiving and storing measurement data and sending it to authorized market participants, such as the metering point operator. Likewise, the measurement data of multi-utility meters (electricity, gas, water, heat) can be read out safely via the SMARTY IQ.

The Smart Meter Gateway SMARTY IQ from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus GmbH, the leading provider of intelligent metering systems, is now successfully integrated into the gateway administration software of Robotron Datenbank-Software GmbH.

Another milestone in the area of flexibility and interoperability of Smart Meter Gateways (SMGw) has been achieved: The SMARTY IQ gateway from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus is now connected to the gateway administration (GWA) software of Robotron.

“After having achieved an integration of our SMARTY IQ into the Sagemcom Fröschl administration software, we are pleased that our SMGw has now also been integrated into the GWA solution of Robotron.” emphasises Detlef Einacker, sales director at Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus. Dirk Engel, head of product management at Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus, reports: “This underlines the flexibility of our API and demonstrates that our product matches with different administration software systems. Accordingly, another important step on the way to the smart meter rollout in Germany in terms of interoperability has been accomplished for our customers.”

Having the SMGw and GWA software connected offers a measurement data reception, which is compatible with the requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). At a technical level, highly secure communication of the SMARTY IQ gateway takes place via the WAN (Wide Area Network) interface, and thereby follows the micro processes defined by the FNN (Forum Netztechnik/Netzbetrieb in the VDE).

The SMGw is the central communications unit in an intelligent metering system (iMSys), which receives and saves multi-sector measurement data from meters, prepares and transmits these for authorised market participants. The meters (electricity, gas, water, heat) can be connected both with cable (RS485) and via near field communication (wireless MBus) to the gateway. The end customer of the utility can access his high resolution consumption measurement values via a local HAN interface. The SMGw also functions as a transparent proxy server for control boxes and other devices connected in the HAN.

The metering point operator and its associated SMGw administrator are also essential components in the intelligent energy grid of the future. The SMGw administrator is responsible for the setting up, configuration, installation and operation of intelligent metering systems. The duties of the SMGw administrator include the configuration, monitoring and control of the SMGw. He also supervises the life cycle of the SMGw from production through installation to de-installation, and creates and administers the profiles for rating loaded into the SMGw.
