Our communication technologies

Thanks to its experience in the telecommunications sector, Sagemcom can call on its know-how to develop metering solutions that facilitate the operation of gas grids.

Sagemcom uses two major types of communication technologies in its gas metering solutions:

Through-a-Gateway technologies (short range)
Cellular technologies (long range)

Through a Gateway

A telecommunications Gateway connects several networks that use different transmission protocols.

The Gateway is both a point of entry and an outlet on a communication network: All the data must communicate with the Gateway before being routed.

The main advantage of Gateways is that they simplify and concentrate connectivity in a single device.

Our gas meters use the WMBus, Wize and LoRaThrough-a-Gateway communication protocols.

Le WMBus (Wireless Meter Bus) représente le standard de communication pour le « smart metering » en Europe, il se distingue par sa facilité d’association avec d’autres protocoles de communication, un déploiement technique facile et rapide et enfin une bonne qualité de couverture réseau.
Le Wize is a standard for a low-power, long-range and bi-directional radio communication that operates around the 169 MHz frequency. Although the Wize Technology was developed in VHF (very high frequency) 169 MHz, it is modular and works on other close frequency bands.
The LoRa (Long Range) protocol offers strong immunity to interference, low energy consumption, that increases the lifespan of the hardware, and a long range of communication.

Cellular

The gas meters designed by Sagemcom also offer the possibility to connect to the communication network used by the general public.

This connectivity with mobile telephone networks allows for two types of uses:

Point-to-point communication: the capability to connect directly to a machine.
Point-to-multipoint communication: the possibility to send data to a group of recipients.

Our gas meters use the following cellular communication protocols :

GPRS
NB-IoT
LTE –M

The latter two communication technologies are controlled by the cellular network operators, which use their 4G and 5G networks to provide communication terminals.
